A Belief System for Re-defining Operational Safety Excellence
 

Paul McCartney once said: “I used to think that people doing weird things were weird people.” Today we refer to such individuals by very different names…corporate gadflies, change agents, and thought leaders. And yes…perhaps ‘weird’, yet successful. These professionals have gone through the safety excellence discovery process. a change in mindset that has enabled them to ‘Redefined Operational Safety Excellence’ in their organizations. This presentation targets the core question central to this process: “Why do some companies manage to achieve peak safety performance, while so many others struggle to maintain mediocrity?”

In this session participants are guided through the four-stage ‘discovery process’ requisite to achieving safety excellence, and are introduced to the core truths which drive peak safety performance in an organization. The latest research on high performance organizations confirms that: “Excellence is not the opposite of mediocrity; excellence is different!” This presentation explores the ‘safety excellence’ difference, i.e., what causes ‘the best’ to out perform all ‘the rest.

High performing organizations aren’t luckier than most; they achieve superior results by first thinking, and then acting differently. This program explores the ‘Covenants of Excellence’, the twelve basic beliefs and core truths that challenge traditional safety methodologies and forge a belief system to drive safety excellence. Based on the June 2004 Occupational Hazards article: “Covenants of the ROSE”, this session helps participants ‘Re-define Operational Safety Excellence’ in their organization by:

• Identifying the four-step ‘discovery process’ requisite to achieving operational safety excellence.

• Recognizing why conventional strategies - the 3E’s (Education, Enforcement & Engineering), and traditional measurements - the 3R’s (Recordables, Rates, & Ratios) impede excellence performance.

• Understanding why ‘Zero injuries’ is not the goal of excellence organizations…and what really is!

• Capitalizing upon the critical human issues that lie at the heart of peak safety performance in the work place, and

• Learning the ‘Covenants of Excellence’; the core truths that forge a belief system to drive organizational safety excellence.
