Research on high performance organizations has revealed a core truth: “Excellence is not the opposite of mediocrity; excellence is different.” This finding, along with the body of construction safety knowledge (academic and practical) evolved over the past 35 years answers the key question: “What makes the ‘safety excellence’ difference in construction”?

This presentation explores the evolution of construction safety, and identifies how insights gained from ‘The Stamford Studies’ on construction management, and the findings of the Construction Industry Institute’s (CCI) ‘Zero Accidents’ research have ‘formed, poured and cured’ the foundation of construction safety excellence enabling member companies to significantly out perform the industry over the past decade.

This session explores the construction safety excellence difference from ‘five’ key perspectives: What high performance: executives, managers, foreman, safety programs, and projects do different from all the rest.

In examining the ‘not so subtle’ differences between excellence companies and ‘all the rest’, this session identifies the ‘four-phase’ personal and organizational transformation’ process requisite to completing the safety excellence journey, and challenges participants to play a hand of ‘Safety Excellence Black Jack’ (21) to see how their safety process fares against the ‘Hand of Excellence’; the’ Seven’ (7) Program Elements, and ‘Twelve’ (12) Project Best Practices correlating with low incident rates in construction.

This session also identifies the ‘Actions of Excellence’ in construction safety - -those executive, manager, Forman and front-line worker actions, which in composite lead to peak safety performance in construction.
