“GETTING A GRIP…
On Behavioral Safety"

This presentation provides an informative and insightful introduction to the key principles, and core elements of an effective behavioral safety process. It answers many of the questions commonly raised by those responsible for evaluating and determining if behavioral safety would be a valuable addition to their occupational safety and health process. This session puts a solid handle on the difficult to grasp issues of human behavior, thereby helping participants get a firmer G.R.I.P. (Gain Real Improvement in Performance) on the process.

This presentation identifies what Behavioral Safety is, discusses the ‘multiple variations’ (vendor philosophies & approaches), which comprise the Behavioral Safety discipline, …and most importantly, emphasizes what Behavioral Safety is not.

The session starts by identifying the multiple strategies that comprise the Safety Excellence Continuum, and positions Behavioral Safety in this hierarchy visualizing its linkage to other strategies requisite to achieving safety excellence.

The session addresses key misunderstandings and confusions (Behavioral Safety Vs Behavior Modification), which have generated resistance to, and has deferred Behavioral Safety’s acceptance by some labor organizations. This program guides participants in understanding the critical relationship between at-risk employee behaviors (triggers of accidents) and systemic organizational drivers (causes of accidents), and identifies true Behavioral Safety as a two-part process that drives beyond ‘observation’ of unsafe employee behaviors, to ‘recognition’ of management systems/practices as being the ‘good reasons for poor performance’ (root causes) of accidents in an organization.
The session constructs a ‘seven step’ implementation model based on the Shewart continuous improvement cycle, and discusses the seven key components that constitute a behavioral safety process. This session also addresses the ‘DARKSIDE’ of Behavioral Safety (common concerns, criticisms, and pitfalls) that can undermine successful implementation and sustainability. An organizational self-assessment allows participants to evaluate these threats, and gauge the readiness of their organization to successfully pursue a behavioral safety initiative.

In concluding, the session identifies the ‘Dirty Dozen’—‘Twelve Shortcuts that guarantee that an organization will come up SHORT’ in a Behavioral Safety process.
