“Insights on Excellence”
This presentation
supported by best practice references and findings from high
performance literature provides answers to the core question of
excellence: “Why do some companies achieve peak safety performance
while so many others struggle to maintain mediocrity?
Excellence
companies, aren’t just ‘luckier than most’… they differ from
their peers, in two very different and distinct ways. First, they
achieve significantly different (better) results, and second, they
do significantly different (best practice) things…and realize the
two are linked! Sir Paul McCartney once said: “I used to think that
people doing weird things were weird people.” Today we refer to such
individuals (and the organizations they lead) by very different
names…corporate gadflies, thought leaders, best in class. Excellence
companies do have very different beliefs about safety…they have
‘Insights on Excellence’ different (weird) from most. This
presentation explores these different ‘Insights on Excellence’.
The session starts out
by building the ‘short case’ for safety excellence, (the high cost
of mediocrity), identifies the biggest impediment to safety
excellence, and explores the requisites of ‘discovery and
transformation’ as organizational initiatives critical to achieving
peak safety performance.
Based in part on the
Professional Safety cover article: “Re-braining Corporate Health and
Safety”, this presentation explores those mindsets common to
excellence organizations, and considered strange (weird) to their
lesser performing peers, including:
-
How Safety Programs
and Safety Culture differ in Excellence Organizations.
-
How the ‘Higher
Purpose’ of Safety Drives Performance in Excellence
Organizations.
-
‘Y’ Safety is Part
of the Business Process in Excellence Organizations.
-
How the Ultimate
Goal (numeric) of Safety Differs in Excellence Organizations.
-
Why Safety is NOT a
Priority in Excellence Organizations.
-
How Leaders Value
Safety in Excellence Organizations.
-
Why Leaders DO NOT
focus on Employee Behavior in Excellence Organizations.
-
How a Manager’s #1
Responsibility is defined in Excellence Organizations.
-
How Safety is
Measured in Excellence Organizations.
-
What Drives
Performance (the ‘P’-word) in Excellence Organizations.
-
How Safety
Contributes to the Bottom Line in Excellence Organizations, and
-
Why Safety is NOT a
Matter of ‘Sr. Management Commitment’) in Excellence
Organizations.
In his best selling
book “Good to Great”, Jim Collins summarized the findings of his
research by concluding:
“Greatness, it turns out is largely a matter of conscience
choice”
‘Insights on
Excellence’ identifies those choices leaders of excellence
organizations (the best) make to achieve peak performance, and
distance themselves from…all the rest.
