MOVING UP…
the Safety Excellence Continuum”
Have accident rates flat-lined… or worse yet increased? Are
injuries impacting your ability to perform? Are legal proceedings
draining precious time and resources? Is doing more ‘SAFETY’, I.e.,
more training, more inspections, more committees, and more
discipline, generating ‘more paper’ and less results? And, are loss
costs continuing to rise in spite of all these efforts? If so,
“MOVING UP” may just be the ‘mind-shift’ message your organization
needs to break the bonds of mediocrity, and move toward Safety
Excellence! Geoffrey Bellman, author of: “Getting Things Done When
You’re Not in Charge” cautions: “You don’t get to where you want to
be, by fooling yourself about where you are.” “MOVING UP” helps
organizations improve their odds of success by addressing the four
questions requisite to Safety Excellence…these questions:
-
Where are we?
– The program sequentially builds a ‘Safety Excellence
Continuum’ depicting the twelve risk management strategies
critical to Safety Excellence. Through a ‘Watch that First Step’
diagnostic exercise, participants identify their organization’s
predominant safety strategies, and locate their current
positioning along the excellence continuum.
-
Where do we want
to be? – The session explores the ‘links’ in the
organizational ‘Reason Chain’, (the good reasons for poor
performance), and proposes a Safety Excellence profile to
identify those process impediments currently impacting results.
If ‘change for the better’ is the desired outcome, an
organization must have a quantifiable scorecard on ‘cultural,
organizational, and leadership’ issues that need be addressed
for performance improvement to occur.
-
What (and who)
must change? – As performance improvement initiatives
(including safety) are change processes, success first involves
personal change in advance of institutional change. The session
profiles the ‘Seven Faces of Excellence’; the evolution of roles
that one must transitioned through to effectively champion
safety change, and targets the real drivers of transformational
change in an organization, its ’Values and Principles’. It
identifies the ‘Attributes of Safety Excellence’, and encourages
participants to engage in “Valuing Safety” initiatives to
identify those ‘core values, guiding principles, and excellence
attributes’ that must be embraced for change in safe
performance…and ultimately results to be achieved.
-
What will speed
up the journey? – Successful change not only requires that
an organization start ‘doing the right things’, but also that it
STOP ‘doing wrong things’. The session encourages participants
to identify the conventional ‘Wiz-dumb’; (wrong-headed thinking
which impedes progress in the right direction), that may exist
in their organization, and to take a lesson from Rosa Parks
and…‘STOP’ doing wrong things!
The presentation
concludes by encouraging all participants to accept and post ‘A Sign
of Excellence’ in their organizations to replace other more common
‘Signs of the Times’. If your organization is ready to ‘make the
move’ to safety excellence, this presentation will point you in the
right direction…and speed your journey!
