“ROC YOUR ORGANIZATION!”
How to Instigate ‘Radical Organizational
Change’
This presentation
addresses the two most important realities of Excellence:
1) Excellence
(success) requires change, and
2) Change (for the
better a/k/a success) is caused. In a recent Fast Company
magazine article, former Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich
emphasized today’s challenge to Business leaderss: ”We can no
longer accept change agents, we must demand change insurgents”
in our organizations.
"ROC Your Organization”
examines the case for change in safety strategy, and calls for
‘radical’ (as in ‘different’--not adversarial) change in what we
think, and how we do safety. The session starts out with an overview
of traditional strategy, (what we do), and identifies the limited
impact on incident rates and loss costs, (what we got) over the past
30 years. It reviews the growing body of evidence (empirical and
practical), that indicates that safety programs, although necessary,
are not sufficient to minimize loss…more is needed…Excellence is
required!
The session constructs
a ‘Safety Excellence Continuum” model which visualizes the multiple
strategies requisite for excellence, and identifies the headwater
element of safety excellence. A workshop entitled” “Watch That First
Step”, underscores the need for a strategic approach to
excellence—an approach that addresses; values, vision, mission and
‘VIP’ Leadership (Visible, Involved and Participative). The results
of this exercise allow participants to identify the correct targets
for change in their organization.
Excellent companies
have two defining characteristics: They get different (better)
results, and they do different (better) things…hmmm, could there be
a connection there? They confirm the safety success formula:
Success =
CEO’…(Change Everything Often!).
With the case for
change established, the session then presents a series of ‘ROC’s
(Radical Organizational Changes) -- ideas, initiatives and change
tactics that Safety Directors, Safety Committees, and Management
Steering Teams can employ to move their organizations upward along
the Safety Excellence Continuum. The program concludes with an
exercise entitled: “Lets ROC”, in which participants are encouraged
to brainstorm and identify specific ROC’s possible in their
organizations to overcome safety mediocrity.
As a result of
attending this session, participants will:
-
Understand that
safety excellence is a function of an organization’s ability to
change and evolve.
-
Understand why
‘traditional’ safety strategies and ‘incremental’ change are not
adequate to achieve high performance safety results.
-
Develop a list of
‘ROC’s’ (Radical Organizational Change) initiatives that can be
employed to instigate ‘change for the better’ in their
organizations.
