“SAFETY
MOTIVATION”
Moving an Organization from ‘Gotta to Wanna’
This seminar is a
primer on motivational principles and practices, and, explores
the many complex issues, which shape behaviors, and define
performance (safe Vs unsafe) in an organization. The session
provides an historical overview of motivational theory, and
identifies those practices proven to drive peak performance in an
organization. CAUTION—The answers aren’t all that new…they’ve just
eluded most managers for over 50 years! The program starts by
identifying the ‘current reality’ in many workplaces today, and
engages participants in a self-assessment to baseline the
‘motivation reality’ in their organization. The ‘whys’ (reasons) for
these findings is what this seminar is all about: the differences
between a highly motivated organization…and all the rest (yawn).
The program explores a
series of key questions to help participants build an understanding
of motivation principles and best practices including:
-
How do you motivate
employees that just aren’t motivated?
-
How much more
productive could employees be…if they wanted to?
-
What really
motivates workers? And, how have we missed it for over 50 years?
-
Is the ‘CRAP’
quotient impeding performance in your organization?
-
What five tests can
be used to determine if performance problems are motivation
problems?
-
What is Lewin’s
fundamental Rule of Organizational Performance?
-
What four
‘organizational drivers’ are most powerful in shaping employee
behavior?
-
Is FEAR a good
motivator?
Do incentives work in
safety…what are the ‘Dark sides’ of safety incentive programs? And,
10. What is the ‘Golden Rule’ of motivation?
The session also
addresses an overlooked truth that exists in many organizations:
“Motivation isn’t he problem…the problem(s) are the problem!”
Workshops challenge participants to look beyond employee behaviors
(the ‘triggers’ of accidents), to discover the ‘good reasons for
poor performance’ - the systemic drivers of employee behaviors
embedded in the organization’s: value systems, leadership practices,
performance management systems, and recognition and rewards systems.
The seminar concludes
by emphasizing that’ motivation’ is not a program, campaign, or
contest, but rather a systematic performance improvement process…the
process of effectively LEADING people! Participants are guided
through a process flow diagram visualizing how to ‘Raise the ‘EIR’
(Employee Interest Rate) in Safety…a seven step motivation process
based on performance management principles.
This seminar isn’t
about quick fixes, gimmicks, and contests, however it does speak to
the opportunities for ‘Rapid Returns’…when employees release their
‘discretionary performance’. This is a program about the real
motivators of safe work behavior—the stuff that leaders are made of.
Does your organization have the ‘right stuff’ to move safety from
‘Gotta to Wanna’?
